Conductor Michael Young<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The English Symphony Orchestra are proud to announce the appointment of\u00a0Michael Young<\/strong> in the newly established role of \u00a0Assistant Conductor. British born conductor Michael Young will take up the new position in January\u00a02017. Michael recently assisted ESO Artistic Director and Principal Conductor\u00a0Kenneth Woods in the world premiere of John Joubert\u2019s opera Jane Eyre. It was\u00a0following his impressive contribution to Jane Eyre that Kenneth decided, for the\u00a0first time in the history of the ESO, to establish a new position of Assistant\u00a0Conductor. Michael was delighted to accept:<\/p>\n

\u201cI am completely thrilled to be named as the first assistant conductor of\u00a0the English Symphony Orchestra. It is one of the UK\u2019s finest orchestras\u00a0and one that is uniquely committed to British orchestral music, new and\u00a0old. I was blessed to be involved in the recent birth of John Joubert\u2019s\u00a0masterpiece Jane Eyre. For me it\u2019s so important that this wealth of music\u00a0gets out there as powerfully and directly to as many as possible, so to be\u00a0working with Kenneth Woods and the ESO is just ideal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael has an enviable CV. He is the is co-founder and Artistic Director of the\u00a0Beethoven Orchestra for Humanity – a new kind of professional chamber\u00a0orchestra and immersive concert experience \u2018fusing topical talk and classical\u00a0music for today\u2019s world.\u2019 Michael has also been Music Director of Charities\u00a0Philharmonia, London Youth Opera and Little Operations. He has won several\u00a0prizes at the Leeds Conductors\u2019 Competition and the Ninth International\u00a0Pedrotti Conducting Competition. In the UK Michael has worked with\u00a0the English National Opera, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Grange Park\u00a0Opera, Fabulous Beast Company, Sinfonia Viva and the Orchestra of Opera\u00a0North. He has also assisted Vladimir Jurowski, Bernard Haitink and Ed Gardner.\u00a0Overseas Michael has conducted orchestras including the Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica\u00a0Nacional del Per\u00f9, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra,\u00a0Orchestra Haydn di Trento e Bolzano and the Ensemble Zandonai.<\/p>\n

The ESO has an incredible heritage of conductors including William Boughton, Yehudi Menuhin, and Vernon Handley. They have a long established tradition of\u00a0supporting the artistic and professional development of musicians which\u00a0Kenneth Woods is keen to build on:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe strongly believe in building relationships with soloists and composers we believe in and one couldn’t help but be impressed by\u00a0Michael\u2019s superb natural musicianship and his openness to learning and taking on new ideas. Having worked together at the Colorado\u00a0MahlerFest, I invited him to be an assistant conductor for the ESO’s recent world premiere and recording of John Joubert’s Jane Eyre.\u00a0Michael has a keen ear for detail and he proved himself an expert rehearsal pianist, quickly earning the total trust of the singers. His\u00a0detailed work on proofreading the newly-created scores and parts of this\u00a0huge work helped enormously.<\/p>\n

\u00a0There are few areas of our industry that are more difficult to break into\u00a0than the world of professional conducting. We hope that our new Assistant Conductor position will offer Michael and his successors, not\u00a0just a chance to learn and observe, but also a platform to show the\u00a0industry what they are capable of at an elite level. This position is\u00a0designed for conductors who are ready to take that next big step forward\u00a0in the industry. We are looking forward to working with Michael and have every\u00a0confidence that he will go on to make his association with the orchestra\u00a0something we’ll take pride in for years to come.”<\/p>\n

This new appointment caps a remarkable year for the English Symphony\u00a0Orchestra receiving multiple awards and widespread critical acclaim for their\u00a0series of concerts . Their recording with Mikhail Korzhev, Krenek Piano Concerti\u00a0vol. 1, was awarded the Sunday Times \u201cBest of the Year\u2019 for 2016 and their\u00a0concert performance of John Joubert\u2019s opera Jane Eyre received rave reviews
\nand earned them Classical Music Magazine\u2019s \u201cPremiere of the Year\u201d for the\u00a0second year running.<\/p>\n
